After a decade of living in Portland and exploring the great outdoors of the Pacific Northwest, this family of four tapped us to ease their transition back home to Pittsburgh.
This was an exercise in storytelling: designing a colorful and cheerful family home for creatives. One that honored both their roots, and their journey. And most importantly, one that brought the peace and harmony of the outdoors in.

Recently updated by a real estate developer, the home had great bones and all the space for a growing family. But finishes were selected for versatility and broad appeal. Our first consideration was to set the mood for spaces through thoughtful use of color, pattern and texture.
How do you design for a family that feels most at home in nature? By bringing the outdoors in.
The designs were inspired by a calming and organic palette. Texture, too, was essential to creating this feel. Pencil reeding, natural fibers and weaving made the home feel grounded, inspiring reflection on time spent outdoors.

An oversized living room was zoned to direct traffic and create distinct lounge and play spaces.
We layered on natural details from this pencil reed dresser to live-edge side tables in the living room.
Highlighting the home’s enviable walk-in closet, walls clad in a tribal pattern beckon from the airy primary.
The designs never feel precious or too serious. Every corner feels casual and inviting.
Color sets the tone throughout, a subtle suggestion of how to engage with each space.
